Costa Rica
Facts
A New Adventure
Destination
Costa Rica has emerged onto the world scene
as one of the most desirable vacation destinations on the planet. In 2004
it surpassed Kauai, Hawaii, as the number one adventure paradise, as rated
by travel publications.
A Natural Wonder
Its long, varied list of natural features
and attractions are what comes to mind when most people think of Costa
Rica. With 5% of all the world’s species and a national commitment to
protecting the environment, Costa Rica is a model for maintaining its bio
diversity while growing a modern economy.
A Long History of Freedom and Human Rights
A closer look at Costa Rica reveals a country with much
depth of history, political and economic stability, and social maturity.
First independent in 1821, Costa Rican has a nearly continuous history of
internal stability. Even when matters resulted in a civil war in 1948, the
outcome recommitted Costa Rica to peace and the nation’s military forces
were disbanded. The continuous period of stability and democracy since
1948 is a testament to Costa Rica’s peaceful tradition.
Costa Rica’s sense of national responsibility extends
to concerns for its neighbors, as well. With political conditions in
Nicaragua threatening regional stability, Costa Rica’s then-President
Oscar Arias authored a regional peace plan that earned him the 1987 Nobel
Peace Price.
An Economic Model
for the Region
Costa Rica’s history of success translated into
economics, as well. It is often referred to as “the Switzerland of Central
America”. Costa Rica’s concern for creating a stable environment for
foreign investment has allowed it to evolve into the only nation in
Central America with industries such as Tourism and Technology that
surpass agriculture as the main source of revenue.
Major international players such as Intel, Unysis,
Acer, and Procter & Gamble have established a solid presence in Costa
Rica. The travel/ hospitality industry has seen the arrival of major hotel
chains from the U.S. (Four Seasons, Marriott, Best Western) and Spain
(Barcelo). International and regional consumer names such as MacDonald's,
Pizza Hut, Sony, Panasonic, Burger King, KFC, Subway, Wal-Mart, EPA,
Cemaco, Pricesmart and Office Depot are seen across the country.
A Welcoming Home for Foreign Visitors and Residents
The U.S. and Costa Rica have a history of friendly
relations. As many as 35,000 U.S. citizens reside in Costa Rica and
500,000 U.S. citizens visit the country annually. Equally impressive
number of residents and visitors trace their origins to Canada and Western
Europe.
